Time Flies: Unraveling Common Time-Related Phrases

We use time-based phrases in our everyday language without giving much thought to their actual meaning. Let’s delve into some common time expressions and uncover their true significance.

Generations: More Than Just Family Ties

When we talk about generations, we often think of family relationships. However, the term “generation” also refers to a specific period of time. Generally accepted as around 20 to 30 years, a generation represents the approximate time it takes for one generation to raise children who will then have children of their own. So, when you hear about a “once in a generation” event, it’s referring to something extraordinary that happens infrequently within that timeframe.

Seasons: More Than Just Weather

While we associate seasons with changes in weather, they also have specific durations. Summer reigns as the longest season, clocking in at around 93 days. Spring follows closely behind, while fall and winter are slightly shorter. These lengths can vary slightly from year to year, but these are the general averages.

Scores, Fortnights, and Business Days: Unpacking the Time Units

A “score” is an old-fashioned way of saying 20 years. Abraham Lincoln famously used this term in the Gettysburg Address when he said, “Four score and seven years ago,” which translates to 87 years ago.

A “fortnight” is simply two weeks. It’s an older term that’s not as commonly used today but still pops up occasionally.

A “business day” typically refers to weekdays, Monday through Friday, excluding weekends and holidays. So, if you’re expecting a package to arrive in three business days, it won’t arrive on a Saturday or Sunday.

Life Expectancy and Planning for the Future

While we can’t predict the exact length of our lives, we do have average life expectancy numbers. In the United States, the average lifespan for women is around 78 years, and for men, it’s about 75 years. These statistics highlight the importance of planning for the future, including life insurance.

Life insurance provides a financial safety net for your loved ones in the event of your passing. It can help cover final expenses, pay off debts, and provide ongoing financial support. By understanding the concept of life expectancy and the potential impact of your absence on your family, you can make informed decisions about your insurance needs.
